Dental Implants

Our dental implant section was put together for your education, on what we believe to be the best solution for replacing damaged teeth. Following are some general information about dental implants.

We have also put together some flash movies which demonstrate the steps taken for placing an implant, explaining the process in each step ( single tooth restoration, partial tooth restoration, implant supported overdenture).

General Information

An implant is an artificial object that replaces and acts as a missing body part. As such, a dental implant replaces the root of a missing or damaged tooth. A replacement tooth then is fixed onto this new root. Dental Implants allow people who are missing teeth to be able to smile, speak and chew well and comfortably.

A dental implant is fabricated from a very strong material that is compatible with your body and is no more incontinent than a tooth extraction.

After the initial healing period, during which the implant is buried in bone and left undisturbed under gum tissue, it is uncovered and connected to a small metal post that secures and supports the artificial teeth.

Provided that sufficient bone is available for the implant, the process to to place an implant is very simple. The procedure can take place in our dental offices using only local anesthesia, which is commonly used in dental procedures

Why we recommend them

Dental implants are like a third set of teeth. They feel much more natural and secure than traditional removable denture plates, especially if these are loose-fitting because of extensive bone loss. If several adjacent teeth are missing, a fixed bridge can be attached to dental implants as an alternative a removable partial denture plate. Dental implants allow for the replacement of a missing tooth without having to modify adjacent teeth. We would be happy to discuss alternatives for restoring your dental function with you.

Who shouldn't have implants

Generally, a person's age does not prevent the placement or use of dental implants. However, preadolescent or very elderly persons may not be good fro treatment. The magor limiting factor in determining whether you can have an implant to replace your missing tooth, is whether there is sufficient bone remaining to accept the implant. An estimate of the bone quality can be determined with special x-ray examinations, which we are equipped with.

As shown in the illustration above bones vary in density. Starting with a solid high density bone on the left, we end up with a very thin layer of high density bone on the right. Even very spongy bone structures like the leftmost can house an implant. It will affect the treatment plan though.
